2-Chloro-1-phenylethanol is a chemical compound that belongs to the group of ester compounds. It is used as an intermediate in organic synthesis, mainly for the production of (R)-(-)-2-chloro-1-phenylethanol. 2-Chloro-1-phenylethanol can be synthesized by a variety of methods including dehydrogenation, dehalogenation, or dehydration reaction. This compound has been shown to have a stereogenic center and can exist in enantiopure form. 2-Chloro-1-phenylethanol also has functional groups such as a carbonyl group, which makes it suitable for catalytic asymmetric synthesis and chemoenzymatic reactions. 2-Chloro-1-phenylethanol is used industrially for the production of styrene through the reduction of its carbonyl group with hydrogen gas and palladium on carbon catalyst.
